Review:Revello’s 2004 Barolo Vigna Gattera is the only wine the estate ages in 15-hectoliter barrels rather than the smaller French oak barriques. Sweet mentholated notes intertwined with dark red fruit and spices emerge from this beautiful, silky-textured wine. Made in a structured style for a La Morra Barolo, it reveals outstanding length and terrific overall balance. This took some time to open up, but when it did, it was superb. The nose is very sensual; dried strawberry fruit, light perfume of lilacs, with edges of exotic spice and pimento bark. On the palate, the initial impression is light berry fruit, dominated by rich dark earth tones, with allspice and nutmeg seeping into each layer of flavor. Although it does not feel heavy on the palate, it is quite dry in comparison to the other Barolo wines made by Revello. This Barolo was aged in large Slovanian oak, and then French barrique.
