Review:Sportoletti’s 2006 Assisi Rosso was one of the highlights of my tastings of Italy’s value-priced wines. Tobacco, earthiness and red cherries dominate the flavor profile of this beautifully nuanced, refined red that is sure to provide much pleasure. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2010.

A classic blend of 50% Sangiovese, 30% Merlot, and 20% Cabernet from estate-owned vineyards around the hills of Assisi, in the region of Umbria. Intense ruby-red, enlivened by purple nuances, this Assisi Rosso is soft and elegant, with a rich texture and an intense bouquet of cherry, strawberry and wild berries. The finish is long, with light notes of tar, resin and toasted wood. Supple and juicy, with soft tannins and succulent finish, this Assisi Rosso is a great value wine.
